The Aliens Have Landed: Bill Gates Warns of AI’s Unprecedented Threat and Pushes for US-China Coalition at Telluride

At the 53rd annual Telluride Film Festival in Colorado, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates delivered a sobering warning about the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, calling it the greatest problem humanity has ever faced. Speaking to attendees during a weekend heavily focused on the promises and perils of AI, Gates invoked science fiction to underscore the urgency of the moment, declaring, “The aliens are here”.

“A Foreign Intelligence”

Gates compared the current state of artificial intelligence to the arrival of an extraterrestrial force—a “foreign intelligence with a different set of motivations that we can’t even understand”. He suggested that just as a global alien invasion would force nations to band together in movies like Independence Day, the realities of AI require urgent, unprecedented global cooperation.

He further likened the technology’s lack of control to HAL 9000, the rogue computer from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. “What we have now is almost like HAL in ‘2001,’ where you could say to it, ‘Please shut down,’ and it would say, ‘OK, I took that under advisement, but I’ve decided that all these other things I read and you told me to do outweigh that dictate,'” Gates warned the audience.Bill Gates has pulled out of India's AI summit amid questions over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein | Fortune

The Need for US-China Cooperation

A central theme of Gates’s remarks was the necessity of international unity, specifically highlighting the need for the United States and China to work together to establish safeguards. Gates argued that China has no more desire to see AI-driven cyberattacks, biological attacks, or a complete loss of human control than American developers do, making mutual cooperation an absolute necessity.

He stressed that the next five years will be critical in determining whether AI becomes a force for good or a catastrophe, noting that AI systems are already outpacing governments’ ability to respond and are already better than he is at writing computer code.

A Broader Movement for AI Regulation

Gates’s dire warnings at the film festival follow a recently published 6,000-word essay on his Gates Notes blog, where he cautioned that AI could either be “the greatest equalizer ever invented, or the worst source of injustice”. During the festival, he identified job displacement, biotechnology risks, psychosocial harms, and cyberattacks as his primary areas of concern.

The tech mogul’s sentiments were echoed by other advocates at the festival. Tristan Harris, co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology, also spoke at Telluride, calling for a deliberate pause in the development of frontier AI models to steer the technology toward a “pro-human future”. While Gates acknowledged the enormous upside of AI—particularly in medicine, education, and assisting farmers in developing nations—he stated that if a credible plan existed to pause or slow frontier AI development, he would likely support it.
