The world mourned when country music icon Dolly Parton passed away on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80, following a private battle with cancer. Now, nearly three weeks after her passing, her sister Stella Parton has broken her silence to share intimate details about the superstar’s final moments and the deeply poignant request she made before the end.
“The Last Thing Dolly Asked Me For Was Prayer”
During an emotional September 11 appearance on CBS Mornings, 77-year-old Stella Parton revealed that Dolly’s final wish was remarkably simple. She didn’t dwell on her legendary legacy, her vast empire, or her fortune.
“The last thing Dolly asked me for was prayer,” Stella told host Gayle King.
Stella also disclosed that Dolly’s final arrangements reflect the deep connection she always held to her roots. Eschewing a lavish, high-profile send-off, Dolly requested to be cremated, with her ashes spread across her beloved Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee.
A Secret Battle Kept from the World
Parton chose to keep her cancer diagnosis entirely hidden from her millions of fans and even from most of her extended family, entrusting the truth only to her innermost circle. Out of respect for her wishes, Stella stated that the family will not publicly disclose the specific type of illness she fought.
The reason for the secrecy was entirely in character for the “Jolene” singer. According to Stella, Dolly “could not bear negative things” and vehemently refused to let her fans worry about her declining health.
When another sister, Freida, asked fans for prayers during Dolly’s health scare in late 2025 (which prompted Dolly to postpone a Las Vegas residency), Dolly gently but firmly shut it down. Stella recalled Dolly telling Freida to “pipe it down” because she didn’t want anyone “spilling my business” and unnecessarily alarming the public.
Heartbreak and a Relentless Work Ethic
Parton’s death came just over a year after she lost her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, who passed away in March 2025 at age 82.
While there has been speculation that Dolly died of a “broken heart,” Stella pushed back on that narrative. Instead, she pointed to her sister’s relentless work ethic and the immense toll of acting as a caretaker.
“I think she worked too hard and didn’t maybe take as good a care of herself as she should have,” Stella explained, noting that Dolly had admitted to neglecting her own well-being while caring for Carl in his final months.
A Peaceful Farewell
Despite the tragedy of her passing, Stella emphasized that Dolly faced her final hours with complete serenity and a profound spiritual readiness.
“She knew where she was going,” Stella shared. “She wasn’t going anywhere bad. She was going to be with mom and daddy. She was prepared. Yeah, she was definitely prepared“.
